On Saturday night around 7:30 p.m., Castro bar/arcade Brewcade was shut down and evacuated due to a fire. As of today (July 13), Brewcade is closed until further notice; no word yet on the state of the vintage arcade games in the beer bar.

According to the Fire Marshall, the radiant heat from a stove in the kitchen of neighboring restaurant, Hecho, caused the wood from inside an adjoining wall to catch on fire. Approximately, 60 people had to leave the bar that night; fortunately, no injuries were sustained.

Further inspection and a second opinion from a city Arsonist Specialist was called off once the cause of the fire was determined to be — “without a doubt” — from Hecho’s kitchen, as claimed in a statement from Brewcade co-owners Shawn Vergara and Tiffny Vergara Chung:

“This has been an unfortunate occurrence; however, we are glad that no one has been hurt. We are working with our neighbors at Hecho to make sure that this is an isolated situation. We thank everyone for their well wishes during this time.”

[And yes, the best part of all this news is that Brewcade totally sent out a press release blaming their neighbor for the fire.  — ed.]

According to Hecho’s Facebook page, it looks like the Mexican restaurant will be open for dinner tonight.

No specifics as of yet on the amount of damage sustained at Brewcade, but it appears to be minimal, as they hope to be fully operational and re-open in the next two to three days, but with fires, you never know. (See also: TBD, Liverpool Lil’s.)

Stay tuned.
